Weird & Wacky: DIY Falsies For Your Feet

1104-fake-toenails_bd.jpgI thought concealer for your feet was the wackiest thing I’d ever heard of but this latest discovery is an eyebrow-raiser.

In all my time going to my local mani/pedi place, I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anyone asking for acrylic toenails, but apparently there is a demand for falsies for your feet because they now come in a handy DIY kit.

The first time I saw these little things I thought probably what you’re thinking now—“Um, fake toenails???? Seriously?”

But then I started thinking about it: Artificial toenails not only provide consumers with a quick and easy way to obtain a flawless-looking pedicure, but can also enabled those with unsightly toenail conditions–like avid runners–to wear open-toed shoes without feeling embarrassed. Or for covering up that one wonky toenail you’ve always hated.

So in the name of research, I went to my local Sally’s Beauty Supply and purchased the  Kiss Fashion Toenails Kit - Everlasting French ($5.99).   If you’ve applied fake fingernails before these are a snap to use though you may have to cut and/or trim some of the nails to fit:

1.  Lay the toenail over your own toe. Clip the nail with nail clippers to fit your toe perfectly if it is too wide.

2.  Apply glue to the back of the nail and the back edge. Set the nail at the edge of your toe’s cuticle line. Make sure the nail is lined up correctly and will fit the width of your toe–without it overlapping the ridges or cutting into you.

3.  Lay the nail flat on the toe and adjust if necessary. Starting from the back, start to lightly press it down.

4.  Repeat with the rest of the nails. Clip the ends of the nails as needed. File the nails well as if they were real. This will make them look even more natural.

5.  Paint the nails or decorate them (the kit comes with stickers but since I’m not 12 I passed on the nail art) as you desire. That’s it!

Well, I’m up to day 4 (it is not recommend that you wear them for longer than 10 days) and the Kiss fake toenails still look as fresh and brand new as the day I applied them. None of them have fallen off, though I’ve mainly been wearing sandals and open-toed shoes. I was not expecting cheapo falsie toenails to actually last as long as they have but  they are holding up surprisingly well.

I can’t say they are anything that I plan to use on a regular basis but the fake toenails are an easy fix in a pinch.  And they’ll be fun for those times when I want to try out a crazy pedi color just for kicks.

What’s your take? Is this idea just too bizarre? Do you kind of want to try them? Have you ever had fake toenails?
