DIY: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Shopping in Chicago I saw these funky shoes at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Red with stars. Super cool, especially for some crazy concert or club hopping with the girls. I think I’d probably wear them once, so, DIY project it is!
Materials:
• Heels in the color of your choosing. Payless has basic pumps for as low as $6.00.
• Patent leather or pleather fabric in two contrasting colors. You won’t need much, so check the remnants bin for deals.
• Fabric glue (not the stuff for hemming, the stuff for applying appliqués). Shinier shoes may require sturdier glue, though you might be able to rough up a shinier surface so the glue gets more of a grip.
Directions:
1. Take the color that you intend to use for the bottom stars. Draw 4 different sized stars on the back. The biggest star should be about an 2″ wide and each subsequent star should be slightly smaller. Though feel free to experiment with sizes and shapes.
2. Take the color that you intend to use for the top stars. Draw 4 different sized stars so that each star is slightly smaller than the stars you drew on the first fabric.
3. Carefully cut the stars out. Small, very sharp scissors are very helpful for this. Or an Exacto knife.
4. Arrange the bottom-color fabric over the shoe. You can copy exactly where the stars on the Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes are placed, or your can experiment and put the stars where you like. Lightly mark where you want to put the stars with a pencil.
5. Using the fabric glue, place the first layer of stars on the shoe. Be sure to cover the entire back of the star well with glue so the edges don’t flip up. Allow this first layer of stars about a half hour for the glue to set just a bit.
6. Glue the second layer of stars over the first layer.
7. Repeat these steps for the second shoe.
8. Set the shoes aside to dry overnight.
9. Find yourself a slinky black dress, do your hair a little punky, slip on your shoes, and head out on the town.
Just a note - these are really one time wonders. The glue probably won’t keep for more than a few wears, but hey, you spent only about $30 to DIY them instead of around $500 so who cares!
