How to Haggle

Piperlime: Up to 50% off Lime Tag Sale.

Nordstrom: At least 40% off shoes (and Nordstrom has great shoes!)

Have You Haggled Lately?

With the economy down in the dumps and sales galore, some shoe lovers have begun haggling even at high end boutiques, getting two for one deals and offering cash over credit for a discount. According to an AP article, retailers are desperate to move stock in time for new arrivals.

The only time I’ve ever haggled over the price of fashion is when I noticed a snag on a dress or a worn down sole on a pair of shoes. On one occasion I bought a dress that went on sale the very next day and the store refunded the difference.

We always haggle for cars and even dentist bills, but fashion? The price seems so set in stone, and the air of exclusivity built around some brands and shops makes the price part of the experience. But if I can save a little money in a shop that needs to dump its stock, then I might consider asking for a discount.

The Consumerist tells you how to haggle for the best deal, quoted here:

  • Be open and friendly in your discussion with the salesperson, ask for them to “work with you” on the price
  • Be discreet, don’t broadcast to other shoppers that you’re getting a deal
  • Escalate to a manager if the salesperson isn’t empowered to make a decision
  • Do your research so you know the fair price to ask for
  • Be creative, ask for free shipping
  • Offer to pay cash so they don’t have to pay a credit card transaction fee
