How to Pack Shoes in a Suitcase

Having just spent a week in Costa Rica and having fit everything in a very small 18″ rollaboard suitcase, packing is on my brain. My wanderlust has made me adept at editing my wardrobe to only the most essential pieces, and I’ve found a few tricks to fit your best shoes in the smallest space.

    1. Start with a small suitcase. You may find you need something bigger, but start small before going big.
    2. Don’t think glamor, think sophisticated. Those gorgeous pair of heels might be what you imagine wearing while you play Audrey Hepburn in Rome, but go basic and chic for better packing. I always bring a pair of black ballet flats for anything dressy and a pair of sturdier lace-ups for any rough walking. If any room remains after packing the essentials, I’ll toss in a fun pair of shoes to shake things up.
    3. Don’t pack sandals. This may sound strange, especially if you’re going to the beach, but I’d rather pack in sturdier shoes for unexpected adventures than waste space on sandals. When the time comes for sandals, buy a cheap pair of flip-flops from the nearest drugstore. I’ve amassed quite the global collection of flip-flops!
    4. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane. Wearing hiking boots on the plane might not be glamorous, but who cares. Chuck off your shoes during flight and relax.
    5. Pack no more than two pairs of socks. I traveled to Spain for a month on two pairs of underwear and two pairs of socks. How? Wash things in the sink and save room for bigger essentials.
    6. Make sure everything matches. Carefully thinking through how each pair of pants will look with your shoes keeps packing efficient.
    7. Don’t leave room for souvenirs. Most souvenir shops will ship items for you. Better yet, skip the souvenir shopping and focus on traveling!

  2. Shoe Diva travels. A lot. And I definitely have a packing strategy. In fact, it’s more of a travel wardrobe strategy. Start with a base in a neutral color like black, brown, or navy. Then only take clothes that work with that base. I use a black base and travel with two pairs of black shoes: a walking pair and a pair of black heels. Like Shoefly, I wear the bulkiest pair en route, which for me means the heels. Yes, I *do* wear stilettos in the airport ;)

But even my walking shoes are elegant. Given that my feet are a size 9, I just don’t do clunky. Cole-Haan Nike Air makes a lovely woven leather flat with patent leather trim, and they’ve been great walking shoes for me.

I also pack my shoes in individual drawstring storage bags to keep the interior of my Tumi rollaboard nice and tidy. Happy travels!
